In January, 2025 President Trump signed an executive order barring federally funded organizations from providing life-saving transgender healthcare to people 19 and under. This decision puts hundreds of thousands at risk, and in a community like Charlottesville this was particularly damaging. The U.V.A. health system announced they would obey the order without question, cutting life-saving care from all patients, in response hundreds of protestors gathered outside of the U.V.A. hospital calling upon the university to protect trans kids. Former president Joe Biden once called transgender rights the civil rights issue of our crime, and there is no doubt he was right. It is the duty of all those who love liberty to defend transgender people, especially youth. Thankfully the protests worked, U.V.A. announced they would change their policy to not taking new patients, but maintaining current ones. Although this is no doubt bad, it is not the worst option. The fight isn’t over yet, and we must continue calling on the University and other organizations to protect transgender people.
